How to design a great kennel!

On a regular basis dog owners are plagued because of poor kennel design. Before building a kennel, the owner must think about climate. How much shelter and what type of shelter do the dogs need given the kennels location and the types of dogs being housed. Sometimes solid walls are necessary, sometimes chain link fence is a better material. In cold climates kennels should be designed to minimize wind blow through – hence increasing canine comfort. In warmer climates blow through might be desired.

When dog doors are used, an extremely durable and chew-proof door should be used. Otherwise you will end up spending excessive amounts on replacement parts. Vinyl flap doors are not durable enough. Steel, aluminum, and/or Plexiglas are the materials that you should select for your doors.

Urine management is also a key issue that must be considered. For example instead of having a drain in the middle of the kennel, a waste management trough a few inches wide should run along the wall so that the kennel can easily be hosed out by its caretakers. This removes waste, urine, and smells from the kennel.

A well designed kennel takes less than half the amount of hours to care to as compared to a poorly designed kennel. Thought and planning in these areas will not only save significant amounts of money and effort over the long hall, but will also lead to healthier, happier dogs.
