While dogs are intelligent animals, much of their behavior is influenced by drives and instincts developed over many thousands of years. Pack instincts, predatory drives, and hierarchy (i.e. whether your dog is a dominant dog, submissive dog, or somewhere in between) can influence a dog's natural behavior.
Training can either tap a dog's natural drive for purposes such as herding or hunting or help rein it in so that a dog can be a good citizen in human society.
