January 25, 2008, Newsletter Issue #220: Praise versus Scolding

Tip of the Week

Dogs generally figure out what gets your attention and then they do what it takes to get that attention. Sometimes it's positive attention. Sometimes it's negative attention. That having been said, training should be a positive experience and further the bond between you and you canine.

Use praise whenever possible to let your dog know she's on the right track. Occasionally, if your dog jumps up at an inappropriate time, it is ok to issue a sharp "No!" to let her know she has misbehaved.
