What should I do if my dog always bolts out the door?

Taming the Bolter

If your dog has been known to make a fast exit at the first sign of an open door, exercise some preventative measures. Consider installing a safety gate that would block your four-legged companion's access to the outdoors. Then, work on some training with your pooch.

Train your dog to sit and stay by the front door. Once this is accomplished, you can practice having your dog sit and stay with the door ajar. Keep your dog on a lead to ensure her safety. Once you are confident that she'll stay put, allow her to sit and stay sans the leash.
