Dogs in the terrier group were generally bred to hunt vermin. Such an occupation often required the dogs to go to ground, or follow the prey animal into underground burrows. This hunting behavior gave rise to the name terrier, derived from the Latin word terra meaning "of earth."
Terriers tend to have a high energy level and an uncanny ability to stick with a task until it is done to their satisfaction. A great benefit when ratting, but no so pleasant in the case of problem behaviors such as barking. Terriers are not likely to back down from a challenge, again this trait was quite helpful for their original duties but is considered far less appealing in the case of obedience training or in the event of a squabble with another dog. These breeds are best suited to individuals who are diligent in their obedience work, have plenty of energy and have the ability to laugh at themselves. Because if you can`t a terrier will be more than willing to do it for you.
