November 23, 2007, Newsletter Issue #211: Puppy Kindergarten

Tip of the Week

To train a companion dog, concentrate on the basics: sit, stay, come, leave it, etc. You will want to enroll in a puppy kindergarten ASAP as this will not only give you tips on how to train your dog, but also socialization with other dogs.

The weekly discipline of a good puppy kindergarten also keeps you working on commands in phases and good puppy trainers will have knowledge about your breed of dog and what techniques work best. They will also have tips for commanding large and small dogs and help you communicate with your dog more effectively.

When introducing a command you will want to have tasty treats to reward your dog. Keep the simpler kibble treats for down the line.

You can find terrific books on the subject but you should make sure to socialize your dog with puppies, dogs and small children as soon and as often as possible.
